The Subject Line
Start with the subject line and make it compelling, not long and not over the edge.
Create your subject line based around something everyone can relate to.
Think of a funny story we all heard as kids, make it a rhyme like Dr. Seuss, make it something people can relate to, make it believable, happy, positive, relevant to today.
Search You Tube for a top rated video and key off something in the video. Do the same for a top ad that you hear or like and while you cannot use the words directly from an ad, you can use them in ways to get your point across.
The body of the copy
There are 2 schools of thought on the body. Some people like long copy while others prefer shorter copy. I personally prefer shorter copy as I think the website is where the selling is done and not the sales letter.
The main purpose of the body of your letter is to get people to take action—whatever that action is.
Generally this is to get people to your site, and this is why I keep my letters short. I say what I need to say and give them the link to the sales page.
Humor is fine in a letter as long as you remember that what you think is funny, may not be funny to someone else.
Also be careful about using specific references that not everyone will understand. In the South people say “Ya’ll” but that is not common in other parts of the US and world.
That brings up another point and you are marketing to the world when you are online, so you need to keep this in mind with your writing.
For example to complain about $3 a gallon gasoline will not get much sympathy when some parts of the world are paying $5 or more per gallon.
Keep your religious and political views out of your copy as they have no place in a sales letter unless you are targeting a religious or political audience.
Find letters you like and make changes to them and use them for yourself.
